We Bought a Fixer Upper!

We Bought a Fixer Upper

Big news! We bought a house in Connecticut. And we are also expecting baby #2. Lots of exciting changes lately. We actually found out all the news on the same weekend. And it’s still a bit hard to believe. Life will certainly be busy with a new baby, an 18-month-old, and a new fixer-upper. We have a lot of work to do on the house and I’m looking forward to sharing all the projects we tackle along the way.

We’re Moving to Connecticut!

We’ve been talking about moving out of state for a while now. My husband and I have both lived in Colorado for most of our lives and have been thinking of making a change. It always felt like a far off dream that wouldn’t actually happen. But when an opportunity presented itself, we decided to try something new and move our family across the country. Scary, but exciting.

We had some goals with our move. The top priorities were a ranch house, some land, and a community feeling in the area. We also hoped to find a fixer upper.

As soon as we made the decision to move, we flew out to Connecticut to explore. We saw so many beautiful towns with strong communities. But we ended up finding a town in Fairfield County that fit everything we were searching for. Driving through the area, it just felt right for this time in our lives. It’s scary to choose a place to live based on one visit, but we took a leap and hope we love it.

Our Fixer Upper Ranch House

We found a ranch house! It’s a true ranch. Everything, including the garage and laundry room, is on the same level. With a one year old and a second baby on the way, I’m ready to say goodbye to stairs.

The house is actually in good shape for a fixer upper, so we are lucky. But it still needs a lot of work, inside and out. There’s a list of issues we need to fix in the first month and a bunch of cosmetic updates. Especially outside. The yard and exterior haven’t been maintained in years.

And the house is on the smaller side. Much smaller than our previous suburban house. We will have to be intentional with how we set it up to keep it feeling spacious and not cluttered. But we are ready to live in a smaller space with only the things we truly love and need.

My favorite part of the house is the yard. The land is beautiful. The house sits on over two acres, partially wooded and partially open lawn and meadow. There’s a little barn, a perfect place for gardens, and so much potential.

Although we will renovate, there’s so much to love about this house already. Every wall is covered in bead-board or shiplap. Even though we will need to update the floors, there is no carpet to worry about. And it has a cute sunroom.

We have lots of changes planned already and are drawing up plans for the many renovation phases. But we want to live in the space first before we commit.

We will need to go room by room, project by project as our budget allows. And we hope to do as much of the work ourselves as possible.

I can’t wait to make this house our own. We will start with cosmetic updates like painting, swapping out fixtures, and landscaping. Then on to the bigger changes!

I will share our progress in the months and years to come. I know we will make a lot of mistakes as we learn along the way. But I am very excited for this next messy, chaotic, and joyful chapter in our lives. And I look forward to sharing the journey with you!
