Room sharing with a newborn those first months means baby items that are normally kept in the nursery need a home in your bedroom temporarily. I’m currently deep in the sleepless nights of the newborn phase, so I’ve focused on organizing my bedroom nursery nook for easy middle of the night feedings. When I’m exhausted, I’m also super inefficient, forgetful, and clumsy. I waste so much time searching for things if I don’t know exactly where to find them. So all the newborn feeding and diapering supplies need to be easy to find for both my husband and I. Every minute of sleep matters in those early days and I’ve found staying organized with simple systems really makes a difference. Here’s how I set up a bedroom nursery nook for efficient and comfortable night feedings and diaper changes. I’d love to hear your strategies and set-ups as well – share your ideas in comments!
How to Organize a Bedroom Nursery Nook
Bassinet
I keep this Halo bassinet next to the bed. This model has feet that slide right under the bed to keep baby close. I also use the space underneath for two baskets – one for swaddles and extra sheets and one for burp cloths.
In the bassinet side pocket, I keep a reusable changing pad liner for messy diaper changes and a clip on book light. The book light is helpful for late night diaper changes if you need to see closely but want to keep the lights dim.
Diaper Changing Basket
I keep a medium sized wicker basket (mine is from HomeGoods) in the bedroom nursery nook filled with diapering and baby care essentials.
I stock the basket with everything I need for diaper changes in case there is a middle of the night blow out. Which always seems to happen when I’m blurry eyed and exhausted at 2am. I also include a few other baby care essentials.
The diaper changing basket contains:
- 5-10 footed onesies
- Baby wipes (the Costco Kirkland brand wipes are my favorite)
- Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment
- Diaper cream
- Baby lotion
- Stack of diapers
- Vitamin D drops
- Nose bulb syringe
Nursing Tote
I keep this cute caddy organizer basket on my nightstand stocked with nursing and pumping essentials. I love that the bag has handles so I can carry it around the house during the day.
Inside the nursing caddy basket I keep:
- Manual breast pump
- Electric breast pump and charger
- Nipple shield
- Nursing pads
- Nursing cover
- A few burp cloths
- Granola bars
- Kindle Paperwhite
- Nipple butter
- Bulb syringe for spit-upsb
Bottle Tub
I filled a plastic tub with bottle essentials (milk storage containers, bottles, formula, dish soap) that I keep in the kitchen during the day and in the bedroom nursery nook at night. Having everything in the room and ready to go makes the process much quicker if we decide to use a bottle for one of the night feedings.
Other Bedroom Essentials
Hatch Sound Machine
I have the kids Hatch Rest+ in our nursery, but we recently bought the Hatch Restore to use in our room during the newborn phase (and after as an alarm clock). It offers the perfect amount of light and white noise to help the baby sleep.
TV
Not everyone wants a TV in their room. I know it’s probably not the best addition to a bedroom for sleep. But I’m including a TV on this list because it’s actually been incredibly helpful. Sometimes I’m so tired at night I can’t stay awake and watching TV helps me get through night feedings. Our little one also really likes background noise right now and sometimes will only sleep when the TV is turned on low if white noise from the Hatch isn’t enough.
Soft Blanket
I love having a cozy blanket ready to grab for skin to skin, nursing, and postpartum chills.
Boppy Nursing Pillow
A lifesaver for nursing. I also love it for arm support when holding my baby.
Extra Pillows
I like a lot of pillow support to sit up straight while nursing in bed, in addition to my Boppy Nursing Pillow.
Large Water Bottle
I drink so much water when I’m awake at night, but I’m way too tired to go refill my water when I run out. I love this big water bottle.
Cozy Robe
I keep this cozy robe next to my bed all the time. I got major postpartum chills and I also use it for skin to skin and nursing.
Nursing PJs
These maternity nightgowns from Pact and this PJ set from Target are my favorites. Super comfortable, soft, and easy to nurse at night.
Charging Station
I have this charging station and I love not having to reach for cords and deal with plugging in my phone, watch, and AirPods. I use my phone to track feedings and diapers, control the Hatch noise machine and TV, and stay awake at night. So I need to reach it easily. I also use AirPods to listen to audiobooks, meditations, or podcasts in the middle of the night.
Trash Can
A diaper pail is ideal for middle of the night diapers. But mine is being used in the nursery with my toddler so I just use a simple trash can. Every morning I transfer the dirty diapers from the trash can to the diaper pail or outside cans. Luckily newborn diapers don’t smell too bad so we don’t mind that the trash can doesn’t contain smells at night.
Kindle
I keep my Kindle in my nursing tote or on my nightstand. This is my number one essential for staying awake at night. It’s gentle on the eyes, catching up on reading makes me feel productive, and digging into an engaging book prevents me from accidentally dozing off.
