10 Empowering Podcasts About Pregnancy and Birth

Empowering Podcasts About Pregnancy and Birth

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I had so many questions. What happens next, what ifs, confusing symptoms, planning for the baby. I read pregnancy books, some of which were incredibly helpful. I asked moms I knew for advice. Against my better judgement, I Googled (don’t do this – it just creates more questions and worries). And I messaged my doctor. But what I wanted were personal stories so I could say, “Hey, that sounds like me.” Finally, I turned to podcasts and I am so glad I did. These 10 podcasts changed my pregnancy. The information and stories empowered me to take charge of my health, ask intentional questions at my appointments, and advocate for myself and my baby. I hope you find your own answers by listening, just as I did.

1. The Birth Hour

I love The Birth Hour podcast. Of all the pregnancy podcasts I listened to, this was the one that impacted my understanding of labor the most. For me, listening to The Birth Hour was the best way to prepare myself for my third trimester. There are so many episodes and all are valuable. You just have to pick and choose which episodes connect to your own pregnancy journey. Or what you are hoping to learn more about.

I faced complications during my third trimester and it was incredibly helpful to listen to a variety of birth stories that related to my situation. I gained a far better understanding of what to expect and what questions to ask my OB during my appointments.

2. All About Pregnancy and Birth with Dr. Nicole Calloway Rankins

Dr. Nicole Calloway Rankins is a practicing OB/GYN with a wealth of knowledge about all things pregnancy and birth. This was one of my favorite pregnancy podcasts. There was an episode for every topic I wanted to learn more about. Dr. Calloway Rankins shares informative content and interviews in a calm manner that I found reassuring while listening. Especially when learning about some of the more stressful topics, like possible pregnancy issues. During my pregnancy I listened to almost every episode of All About Pregnancy and Birth with Dr. Nicole Calloway Rankins.

3. Motherhood Meets Medicine

Motherhood Meets Medicine is my all-time favorite motherhood podcast. The host, Lynzy Coughlin, is a practicing ER Physician Assistant and she explores a wide range of valuable topics for future, expecting, and current mamas. I can always look back and find an episode that relates to my current pregnancy or motherhood dilemma. And I always feel calm, empowered, and seen after listening. The expert interviews are informal conversations that keep motherhood real and honest. I particularly love the emphasis in each episode on mental health and self-care. I also love Lynzy Coughlin’s weekly newsletter.

4. Preggie Pals

The Preggie Pals podcast shares interviews with a wide variety of experts, including licensed clinical social workers and birth doulas. The host, Stephanie, has three kids and is a trained childbirth educator. On each episode of Preggie Pals, a panel of moms asks an expert questions ranging from common pregnancy questions to all those questions you thought you were the only one wondering about. I loved that the questions came from real moms. There is great content about mental health and identity as well. On each episode, Preggie Pals also reviews a mom app and the panel of moms gives feedback. I have found some great apps and have learned a lot about mom life from this podcast.

5. Wellness with Ella

Wellness with Ella is overall one of my favorite podcasts. But there are two episodes in particular about pregnancy, birth, and motherhood that I found helpful.

My favorite episode is Season 2 Episode 6: Baby Mills! What to Expect When You are Expecting. I listened to this episode during each phase of my pregnancy. Each time I listened to the episode, something new resonated with me. Ella Mills and her husband share their pregnancy journey and chat with Marina Fogle of The Bump Class. I found their story and discussion incredibly relevant.

I would also recommend Season 4 Episode 4: Changing the Birth Narrative. This episode dives into the birth experience including the value of choice and the culture of fear surrounding birth. Highly informative and empowering.

6. The Melissa Ambrosini Show

The Melissa Ambrosini Show is another favorite podcast that has a few really great pregnancy focused episodes. I would recommend the Episode 373: Our Pregnancy Journey and Episode 392: Trusting Your Body, Overcoming Fear, & Birthing With Confidence. I found the perspective in these two podcasts to be unique from the other podcasts on this list. Loved the honest discussions around fertility, pregnancy, and birth as well.

7. Pregnancy and Birth Made Easy

The Pregnancy and Birth Made Easy podcast is hosted by Stephanie, a mom of three, professional doula and childbirth educator, and the creator of the My Essential Birth online course. On the podcast, women share valuable information about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. There are a variety of episodes on topics that were not covered elsewhere (holiday inductions, baby-wearing), as well as outstanding interviews and birth stories.

8. Pregnancy Pukeology Podcast

The Pregnancy Pukeology Podcast combines comic relief with really useful information. Listen for the answers to all those pregnancy questions you have. I am particularly impressed with the quality of information shared on some of the episodes covering heavier topics, like preeclampsia. And I love the straightforward and friendly way questions are answered by the experts interviewed on the show.

9. 40 Weeks Pregnancy Podcast

The 40 Weeks Pregnancy Podcast is just for fun. There is a super quick episode for each week of pregnancy that will tell you all about how your little one is developing. I became slightly obsessed with the miracle of how my baby was growing and changing. This podcast was a fun weekly routine to find some excitement in the pregnancy journey.

10. Pregnancy Confidential

The Pregnancy Confidential podcast is similar to the 40 Weeks Pregnancy Podcast, but it is more about mama than baby. Pregnancy Confidential is a series of 32 podcasts designed to be listened to during each week of pregnancy. The episodes are less than 20 minutes and cover topics like telling your boss you are pregnant, birth plans, and gender reveals. This podcast is fluffier and less focused on empowerment than all the above pregnancy podcasts, but sometimes it is fun to think about before-baby bucket lists and registries, not all the other stuff.
